Frequently Asked Questions

Is this course for me?

Among the most common reasons people give for coming on a course or following up on developmental courses are:

  • Noticing that relationships with partners, parents, children or friends exhibit a repeated pattern, feel stuck or are otherwise proving less fulfilling than wished for
  • An awareness of patterns of behaviour such as irritability, anger, lethargy, reactivity, anxiety, that are not proving life-serving
  • A lack of a sense of purpose or direction in life, a sense of under-fulfilment.

Does it work for everyone?

There is a high degree of personal choice in pursuing this work. The most important thing is to find what is relevant to you and to explore and develop it over time. Making a lasting practice of the principles and processes is the key.

Do I need prior experience?

No specific prior experience is required.  A willingness to be open to the possibility that my mind doesn’t have all the answers is the most important requirement.

What is involved in the courses?

An introductory course will typically cover some or all of the following topics:

  • Overview
  • Recognising how and why in relationship we are often “triggered” into reactive patterns of thought
  • Values – opening to a different place of understanding
  • Feelings as a guide to my values
  • Embracing the beauty of my values
  • Moving from reactivity to value
  • Empathy – for others and for myself
  • Listening and speaking empathically
  • Dealing with anger, pain, guilt and depression

All courses emphasise practical work in pairs or in small groups.

What will it do for me?

To a large degree, participants take from courses what is most appropriate to them, in their lives inner and outer.  Typically this might include one or more of:

  • An increased understanding of how and why they respond in particular ways to certain people or certain sorts of communication
  • An increased ability to understand what others may be trying to communicate to them
  • An insight into their core longings and how the mind develops beliefs about the world that may inhibit access to these longings of the heart
  • A greater understanding of the choices they have in relating to others and more capacity to exercise that choice
  • A greater understanding of the difference between empathic communication and mind-based communication

What are the downsides?

Courses may throw up insights that initially are experienced as painful.  Occasionally individuals may experience anxiety or vulnerability in some of the practical exercises.  This is an entirely natural consequence of beginning to unlearn habituated patterns of relationship.  All courses are held in a supportive and compassionate environment and numbers are strictly limited to ensure that all participants receive the support they require.

How can I follow up?

Regular developmental days are offered for those who have completed an Introductory course.

The Centre also runs Practice Groups for those who have attended an Introductory course.  These are generally held on a weekday evening over a period of six weeks.

An annual residential intensive training is also offered.
